A man died in a “water incident” in Piha this morning.

Emergency services were called at 8.15am on a report of a man injured in water difficulties near Marin Parade South, on a surfing beach on the West Coast of Auckland.

Police said the man unfortunately died at the scene.

“Police will investigate the death on behalf of the coroner, who will promptly publish his findings.”

Piha is one of the most famous surfing beaches in New Zealand and one of the most dangerous.
Hundreds of people escape there every year, often falling into its powerful rupture currents.
