The racer died Sunday night after a speedway accident in Palmerston North.

At around 6.15 pm, emergency services were called to the Central Energy Trust Arena.

Worksafe has been notified and police will conduct an investigation on behalf of the coroner.

The dead man is believed to be Stephen Penn, a member of Manawatu Mustang.

Footage from the track shows security crews and event staff putting large covers on the regular car.

There was also a voice-over in which it was announced that the race meeting was officially canceled.

When the accident happened, the race was live.

“Stu it went completely wrong because it ended up turning heavily into that wall below,” one commenter said.

– Oh, it’s brutal.
