Robert Downey Jr. has expressed his willingness to reprise his iconic role as Iron Man, indicating that he would “happily” step back into the suit if given the opportunity.

The 58-year-old actor portrayed Tony Stark and his superhero alter ego in 11 movies spanning from 2008’s “Iron Man” to 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Despite Tony Stark’s poignant demise in the latter film, Downey emphasized that his connection to the character remains strong, describing it as an integral part of his DNA.

Downey shared his sentiments in an interview with Esquire magazine, acknowledging Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s influence and expressing confidence in Feige’s ability to shape the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He stated, “That role chose me…never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

In addition to Downey’s remarks, his co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, who portrayed Pepper Potts, Tony Stark’s assistant and wife, revealed insights into their collaborative process. Paltrow disclosed that Downey’s penchant for improvisation often led to last-minute script changes, with lines being rewritten moments before filming. She highlighted Downey’s commitment to keeping the scenes fresh and vibrant, attributing the spontaneity of many memorable moments to his improvisational skills.

However, despite Downey’s openness to returning to the role, Marvel Studios has made it clear that there are no immediate plans to resurrect Tony Stark. In December, Feige reiterated Marvel’s commitment to honoring the character’s poignant sacrifice in “Avengers: Endgame,” stating that they would not “magically undo” his death for future films. Feige emphasized the significance of Tony Stark’s journey and the collective effort invested in crafting his character arc, indicating a desire to preserve the integrity of his narrative conclusion.

While Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man remains deeply ingrained in the hearts of fans, it appears that, for now, his character’s story will continue to resonate through the legacy he left behind rather than through future on-screen appearances.
